They open great opportunities, such as socializing, improving your memory, analytical and strategic thinking and finally learning to earn serious money playing your favorite games.

People choose to play free poker games for very different reasons, but the major inducements are:

•  entertainment

•  socializing

•  learning poker rules

•  improving basic skills before playing real money games

How to choose a game?

If you are going to play free poker games for the first time, you have to choose one of numerous poker variants. The most popular poker game available in all online and land-based poker rooms is Texas Holdem, as well as its variants: No-Limit Texas Holdem, Limit Texas Holdem and Pot Limit Texas Holdem. Besides of availability in all poker rooms, Texas Holdem is the easiest game to learn and play. Second popular free poker game is Omaha and its variants: Pot-Limit Omaha and Omaha Hi-Lo, then 7 Card Stud and some other poker games. I'd recommend starting with Texas Holdem and then, if you want, learn the rest of free poker games. You can easily determine at which poker variant you do best by keeping track of your games.

Basic selection of free poker games available in most online poker rooms are Texas Holdem, Omaha and 7 Card Stud. Take a look at brief description of each of these games:

Texas Holdem . Texas Holdem poker is by far the most popular free poker game on web. Texas Holdem (also known as just Holdem Poker) is a community card game, which means that each player may use any combination of two pocket and five community cards in order to form a winning poker hand, while in many other poker variants like Draw or 7 Card Stud, each player holds an individual hand. Texas Holdem is very popular for its simplicity. However, this doesn't mean that you can start at the highest limits. It is better to start at lower limits and advance to higher limits as soon as you start feeling comfortable and win more than 50% of games at the limit you play. You can find plenty of useful strategy articles and valuable tips directed towards the beginners, intermediate and advanced poker players as well as poker professionals on our site.

Omaha Holdem . Omaha Holdem steadily holds second position among top free poker games. Omaha is also a community card poker game, very similar to Texas Holdem poker. In Omaha each player is dealt four pocket cards and must form his poker hand using exactly two pocket cards and three community cards, which means that a player cannot use 1 pocket and 4 community cards, 3 pocket and 2 community cards, etc. The sequence of betting rounds and layout of community cards in Omaha and Texas Holdem are also identical. You can find plenty of strategy articles and tips dedicated to Omaha Holdem on our site.

7 Card Stud . 7 Card Stud (also known as Seven Card Stud, or just Stud) is also a popular free poker game available in most land-based casinos and online poker rooms. In fact, Seven Card Stud was the most popular free poker game in the US and in Europe , before the recent increase in popularity of Texas Holdem poker. 7 Card Stud can be played by 2 to 8 players. 7 Card Stud is the “S” game in H.O.R.S.E. Unlike Omaha and Texas Holdem, 7 Card Stud is only played with a limit betting structure and there is neither no-limit nor pot-limit variants of the game.

5 Card Draw . Five Card Draw is a very special free poker game, since it is the most popular home poker game. Many people grew up playing this game, where a player's goal is to build the best five-card hand after one draw. Just like Texas Holdem, Five Card Draw is easy to learn, but takes a lot of time and patience to master. Just like flop games, draw games are played with blind bets. Each player gets five pocket cards and action continues clockwise starting from the first player sitting after the big blind. Generally, in all draw games the sequence of action goes as follows:

•  5 pocket cards are dealt to each player

•  1 st betting round begins with first player after the big blind

•  draw

•  2 nd betting round begins with a player sitting to the left from the dealer button

•  the game ends with a showdown, unless all, but one player folded earlier

The player holding the best five-card combination wins the pot, except if all, but one player folded earlier than the showdown occurs. If two or more players have equally valued hands, then the pot is split among them equally.

Razz . Razz is less popular than the previously mentioned free poker games, but it still stays in top5 poker variants. Razz is a form of Stud Poker, which is usually played for ace-to-five low. In Razz, your goal is to build the lowest 5-card hand from the seven cards dealt to each player. In this game the ace always plays low and neither straights, nor flushes count against you for low. The best possible hand in Razz is 5-4-3-2-A, or “Five High”, which is also frequently called “the wheel”. Razz is the “R” game in H.O.R.S.E.

H.O.R.S.E. H.O.R.S.E. is a poker variant commonly played at the high stakes in online poker rooms and land-based casinos, but it is also available as a free poker game in some online poker rooms. This poker game consists of several rounds of play that cycle among Texas Holdem, Omaha 8 or Better, Razz, 7 Card Stud and 7 Card Stud 8 or Better. H.O.R.S.E. is always a limit game, including Texas Holdem rounds, but in some tournaments Texas Holdem is played in its No-Limit form.

These are just the basic description of top free poker games available in most online poker rooms. Again, if you have never played free poker games before, it is recommended that you start with Texas Holdem and then learn one or more other poker games. Remember that there is no limit for perfection, so the more you know – the better player you are.
